Holy Double Take, Batman! Here Comes a New Caped Crusader
Watch out, Christian Bale—there's a new Batman coming to town!
His name is Armie Hammer, an unknown actor handpicked by Mad Max and Happy Feet director George Miller to play Bruce Wayne and his Caped Crusader alter ego in the upcoming superhero-filled Justice League Mortal.
Hammer insists he has not intention of stirring up a battle of the Batmans. "That guy's got his s--t down," Hammer says of Bale.
Even so, Hammer does point out that there's at least one big difference between the two. "My codpiece is bigger," he said with a laugh the other day from Vancouver, where he's shooting the CW's The Reaper (he plays the son of the devil).
While there have been reports that the Justice League flick has been shelved because of too many setbacks (including the writers' strike), Hammer says he hopes to see it get made...
Breaking News
Bale in the Clear Over Assault Allegations
Christian Bale's "deeply personal matter" has suddenly become a nonexistent one.
British authorities have confirmed that the Dark Knight star will not face any charges in connection with his highly publicized yet detail-scarce arrest on suspicion of assaulting his mother and sister last month.
"We can today confirm that we have advised the Metropolitan Police Service that the actor Christian Bale should not face any charges," the Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement released today.
The CPS also said there was "insufficient evident to afford a realistic prospect of conviction" on the charges and that "the police have been advised that no further action should be taken against Mr. Bale."
He is, however, expected to receive a caution by police next month.
Batman Bale Keeps Reporters in Dark About Arrest
The Japanese media can say sayonara to any insight on Christian Bale's recent arrest.
"It's a private matter," Bale told reporters at a Tokyo press conference promoting The Dark Knight.
When one brazen media type ignored the noncomment and asked whether the 34-year-old box-office king was doing "OK," Bale stuck to his batguns.
"It's a private matter," he repeated.
Comic-Con: Terminator's McG Talks Bale, 'Bots
McG doesn't give a lot of interviews, so listen up. Over the weekend, the Terminator Salvation director talked to me about the four minutes of man vs. machine action he previewed for thousands of fans at San Diego Comic-Con. He also spilled about how he got Terminator maestro James Cameron's blessing, whether star Christian Bale can pull off being both Batman and John Connor, and the deal with the rumored Arnold Schwarzenegger cameo. Check the clip to get the full story.
Comic-Con: Can Batman Beat the Terminator?
Edward Furlong and Nick Stahl never quite seemed the type to save humanity in a great war against the machines. Which may be why John Connor in Terminator Salvation is played by Christian Bale, a man so badass that the police have to be called to save people from his verbal assaults.
Bale, alas, is currently in Japan promoting The Dark Knight and not talking about his alleged family altercation, but director McG and cast members including Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Worthington, Common, and Moon Bloodgood showed up to an enthused Comic-Con panel with some early footage.
Of course, everyone wanted to know whether Arnold will be back. McG played it coy: "The T-800 model is indeed part of the mythology of the Terminator."
No Such Thing as Bad News for Dark Knight
Can anything stop the Batman?
With The Dark Knight having blown past $200 million on Tuesday, just five days into its release, the answer apparently is no.
Steve Mason, lead box-office analyst for FantasyMoguls.com, said he thinks the movie will pick up another $70 million-$80 million this coming weekend, helping it blow past $300 million in less than 10 days.
"There's never been anything like it," Mason says via email.
The seemingly endless record grosses are coming despite a pair of offscreen incidents that, individually, have helped kill lesser movies: (1) the shocking death of one star and (2) the criminal allegations against another.
Bale Stays Silencio in Barcelona
The Dark Knight has decided to keep everybody in the dark when it comes to allegations of assault lodged by his Batmom and Batsis.
During a press conference promoting The Dark Knight in Barcelona last night, Christian Bale decided to keep his private life private when faced by relentless queries from the press about what went down in a London hotel room that resulted in him being questioned for more than four hours by police.
"It's a deeply personal matter," Bale said. "I would ask you to respect my privacy in the matter."
Christian Bale, Wife "Solid" at Knight's Spain Premiere
Christian Bale's family ties are a little loose right now, but his marital relations appear to be holding fast.
Sources close to the Dark Knight star tell E! News that, contrary to new headlines suggesting that his eight-year marriage to Sandra Blazic is on the rocks, "his and Sibi's marriage is solid."
Marital troubles are just one of the reasons being bandied about to explain the seemingly random alleged showdown between Bale and his mother, Jenny, and sister Sharon at a London hotel that resulted in the actor's arrest Tuesday when he turned himself in for questioning.
Comic-Con Preview: Watchmen, Ninjas and...Paris?
Today's the day, fanboys (and girls). San Diego Comic-Con, the world's biggest comic-book convention and pop-culture expo, opens tonight with an expected crowd of more than 120,000.
And that's not counting invaders from Hollywood, with the studios aggressively parading their early footage, news and stars. Fans—if they can get into the packed halls—will be the first with scoop on geek-fave flicks Watchmen, Terminator Salvation and Ninja Assassin, plus Lost, Heroes and new shows from J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon. All that and more Seth Rogen, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Smith than you can shake a lightsaber at.
Heck, Paris Hilton is even rumored to crash the panel for her movie Repo! The Genetic Opera.
We have the Con covered, through Sunday, but first, check out our gallery of shows and movies getting some Comic-Con love.
Update
Christian Bailed Over Alleged Assault; Denies Wrongdoing
Batman is once again flying free. Which should make the rest of his press tour rather interesting.
Christian Bale has been released on bail after spending more than four hours in police custody at a central London station being interrogated over allegations he assaulted his 61-year-old mom, Jenny, and 40-year-old sister, Sharon, Sunday night.
"Mr. Bale, who denies the allegation, cooperated throughout, gave his account
in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police," the actor's lawyers at the high-powered London firm Schillings said in a statement.
"At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale."
Update
Batman Bale Arrested for Alleged Assault
Maybe they should have called it The Really Dark Knight.
Batman star Christian Bale has been arrested in London after turning himself in to a police station to undergo questioning on allegations that he assaulted his mother and sister.
The incident allegedly took place in the box-office champ's Dorchester Hotel room in London on Sunday, the day before the blockbuster film's European premiere.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson tells E! News that Bale presently faces "no charges, all we are saying at the moment is that a 34-year-old male attended a central London police station this morning, by appointment, and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault.
"He currently remains in custody."
Rate-a-Trailer: Bale vs. 'Bots in Terminator Salvation
Stop. Flickering. Just for a second, OK? This first teaser trailer from next summer's Terminator Salvation won't sit still, and all we want is a good look at those menacing robots—and that war between man and machine we've been hearing about for three movies. Also, we'd like to get a better look at Christian Bale as human resistance leader/hero John Connor.
Anyway, we get the basic idea: Humanity is doomed, Bale is Hollywood's handsomest badass, and a Schwarzenegger-free reboot of the Terminator flicks, with McG directing, could actually be cool. What do you think? Do you dig it, or should Arnold be bahhck? Sound off in the comments.
